INPEX Browse Ltd. as operator of offshore permit area WA-285-P, proposes to develop the Ichthys Field in the Browse Basin to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate for export to markets in Japan and elsewhere.

The licence for WA-285-P is held jointly by INPEX Browse Ltd (76%) and Total E&P Australia (24%), a subsidiary of Total S.A. INPEX is a Japanese oil and gas company headquartered in Tokyo, which has substantial interests in Australian and international oil and gas projects. Total S.A. is a French oil and gas company with operations in over 130 countries.

The Ichthys Field is located approximately 450 kilometres north of Broome and 850 kilometres south-west of Darwin, off the north-west coast of Western Australia.

The Ichthys Field measures approximately 40 kilometres by 20 kilometres and is one of Australia's largest undeveloped gas fields, with reserve estimates of 12.8 trillion cubic feet of gas and 527 million barrels of condensate and an expected operational life of over 40 years.

The joint venture is now working towards the commercialisation of this resource and on 26 September 2008 announced that it had selected Middle Arm Peninsula at Blaydin Point in Darwin Harbour in the Northern Territory, to develop a liquefied natural gas processing facility.

Front-End Engineering Design (FEED)

The Onshore FEED contract is being undertaken by the JKC Joint Venture comprising JGC Corporation (JGC), Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) and Chiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda). The Onshore FEED services are to be performed by the JKC Joint Venture during 2009. The FEED is the project development phase in which plans for the proposed LNG processing plant are defined, designed and evaluated in more detail by a contracted engineering company.

AMEC Engineering Pty Ltd will be undertaking Offshore FEED activities.

Proposed facilities.

The Ichthys Project is expected to initially produce more than 8 million tonnes of LNG per annum, approximately 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per annum and 100,000 barrels of condensate per day.
